As Part Of The Mine Tour:

A brief visit to the Warren Museum is included as part of the two-hour mine tour of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum. All visitors exit the mine through the Warren Museum and are given time to view its four rooms of exhibits. The schedule of mine tours for each month is given below under Dates and Hours of Operation. 

Current (2005) ticket prices are $9.50 for adults, $8.50 for senior citizens (65+), and $7.00 for children (12 and under). A modest price increase is anticipated for the 2006 season. Warren Museum Only:

During normal operations the Warren Museum can be viewed only as a part of the mine tour. Those desiring to view the displays at leisure, or wishing to visit the museum without first taking the mine tour, are encouraged to call ahead (973-209-7212) for an appointment. The mine staff welcome such requests but can honor them only if sufficient guides are available. A minimum price of $15 per hour will be charged for a tour guide; for parties of three or more the price per person will be $5 for each hour.

Dates And Hours Of Operation

January, February: Closed. Visits by special appointment only, weather permitting.

March, April: Open on weekends only, weather permitting. Weekdays by appointment only. Public tours at 1 P.M.*

May 1 through November 20: Open seven days a week except for Easter Sunday and Thanksgiving. Public tours at 1 P.M.*

December: Open weekends, weather permitting, and during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Public tours at 1 P.M.*

*Tours at other times of the day can be arranged for groups of 10 or more by appointment if time slots are available. Most of the morning time slots during the school year are taken by school groups; thus public tours generally take place only at 1 P.M. Occasionally, however, we have a vacancy in the morning schedule. Prospective group visitors are urged to call ahead (973-209-7212) for availability. Individuals and small groups of 2-4 people arriving unannounced may be added to school groups if sufficient space is available.

The Thomas S. Warren Museum of Fluorescence is located in Ogdensburg, in the scenic Highlands region of northern New Jersey. Franklin Mineral Museum

The Franklin Mineral Museum contains extensive displays of minerals from the world-famous zinc mines at Franklin and Sterling Hill, as well as a large collection of worldwide minerals, Native American artifacts, and fossils. A perennial highlight of the museum is the 32-ft-long display of the local fluorescent minerals. The Buckwheat dump adjacent to the museum is open to mineral collecting for a nominal fee.

Franklin Heritage Museum

The Franklin Heritage Museum occupies three rooms of the old Time House of the Franklin mine (closed 1954) and offers exhibits on many aspects of the history of this famous mining town, including photographs, newspaper accounts, sporting equipment and events, uniforms, postcards, memorabilia, and much more. The gift shop specializes in items relating to the local area. The museum is open April through October on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4; exact opening and closing dates depend on staff availability. For information call 973-209-1232.

Ogdensburg Historical Society

The Ogdensburg Historical Society maintains a small museum dedicated to the history of Ogdensburg, within whose borders both the Sterling mine and the Sterling Hill Mining Museum are located. Exhibits include photographs and paintings of early settlers and buildings, a large display explaining the mining and milling of the high-grade zinc ore of the area, and numerous items of local memorabilia. The museum does not maintain regular hours, and prospective visitors are advised to call ahead for an appointment. The phone number is 973-827-3319.
