Individual & Family Mine Tours

Sterling Hill offers Public Mine Tours for individuals and families according to the schedule below. One should try to arrive 1/2 hour ahead of the tour time to relieve congestion.

Fossil Discovery Center

Select days, May - November.
This is a $4.50 per person add-on option to the Mine Tour.

Rock Discovery Center

Saturdays & Sundays at 12:00 p.m. ONLY.
April - October.
Additionally, on unseasonally warm days.
This is a $4.00 per person add-on option to the Mine Tour.

If you are bringing a group of less than 10 people you do not need reservations — simply show up BEFORE the tour start time to purchase your tickets.

For larger groups (10 or more people) please see the section on Group tours for a discount on reservations made in advance (at least two weeks). If you are coming in a group of 10 or more and do not have a reservation, please call in advance (that morning or the day before) so we can be sure to have a sufficient number of tour guides available. The 1:00 p.m. tour leaves at 1:00 p.m. SHARP!

Payment can be made by cash or check upon arrival at the museum.
We also accept money orders, credit cards (Visa and MasterCard only), and traveler’s checks. If paying in cash, please have all the cash for your family and friends collected prior to arrival.

*Military personnel (both active duty and veterans):  You, your spouse, and your children will each get $1 off your ticket prices in each price category listed above.  Please bring some form of ID showing military status.

Note:  Purchase of a tour ticket does not entitle you to collect minerals on the Mine Run dump. Admission to the collecting areas is a separate $5 charge.  Please see the Mineral Collecting page for details.

 

 

General Information

Guided tours last about two hours and include one hour in the underground zinc mine, half an hour in our large exhibit hall, and about 10 minutes in our museum of fluorescence.

Visitors are welcome to view our outdoor exhibits of mining equipment on the parking-lot level on their own, but entry to the mine and any of our buildings except for the gift shop/snack bar/ticket sales area requires the presence of a tour guide. Self-guided tours are NOT allowed.

Please note that regardless of the weather or season it is a cool 56° in the mine, so make sure you bring with you a light jacket or sweater, even in summer. Sturdy footwear is also advisable. While in the mine you will be walking on a hard-packed gravel surface.

Our museum features indoor as well as outdoor sheltered picnic tables, modern restroom facilities, a snack bar, and a fully stocked museum store.
