Planning A Class Visit

Upon arrival at the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, the entire group is brought into the museum and given a 30-minute presentation in the indoor exhibit hall. Next, large groups are divided into classes with their respective teachers, chaperones and Museum tour guide. The tour guide will lead a group from the exhibit hall outdoors and into the former zinc mine located on the property. Tour length is 2 hours.

Group Size Limits

The Museum can accommodate several small groups at a time or one large group. Our maximum number of visitor at any one time is 175.

Time Needed

Allow at least two and a half hours visitation time at the Museum, but preferably three hours.

Reservations

The Museum is open seven days a week from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. and special arrangements can be made for large groups.

Reservations must be made at least is one week prior to your anticipated tour date. Many schools bring their students every year and book months in advance of their visit. If you have a large group, call as early as possible to avoid disappointment. All reservations are subject to availability. No rain dates allowed—much of the tour is indoors or underground.

School group reservations can be made by calling 973-209-7212.

Fees

If your school's policy allows souvenir shopping the below pricing applies. If your school's policy DOES NOT allow souvenir shopping, ADD $1.00 per person to prices below.

Students 12 and up and adults: $8.50

One teacher per class (20-25 students) receives free admission. All other teachers and chaperones pay fees as adults.

Payment Methods

Cash or check payable on arrival at the museum. Purchase orders are accepted. (If you are paying in cash, please have all cash collected prior to arrival.)

Attire

Visitors should wear low-heeled enclosed shoes (no sandals) such as sneakers. Regardless of the weather or time of season, insist that your students bring light jackets or sweaters. It is a cool 56ºF year round in the underground mine.

Meals and Snacks

We have indoor as well as outdoor sheltered picnic tables near our modern restroom facilities. There is a concession stand selling lunch items (hot dogs, corn dogs, personal pizzas) cold beverages (including bottled water) and snack foods (including ice cream).

Museum Shop

Many school groups visit our fully stocked museum shop after their tours. Students enjoy purchasing minerals specimens from around the world, fossils, and inexpensive jewelry that incorporate minerals. There are many items five dollars and under. For teachers, the museum shop stocks a collection of fluorescent minerals native to Sterling Hill, ultraviolet lamps for viewing fluorescent minerals, and general interest books about rocks, minerals and geology, as well as publications about the Sterling Hill Mine.
