“Cool Stuff”

The first SHIG workshop for science educators was held at Sterling Hill on July 17, 2003. Designed to  help teachers introduce mineralogy to young students in a way that immediately captures their imagination, many  of the minerals featured that day fall into a category that students might call “cool stuff.” The teacher favorite appeared to be ulexite (commonly sold as “TV rock”), a mineral that is a natural fiber-optic material.

SHIG Awarded a $25,000 Grant to Train Teachers

Sterling Hill Institute of Geoscience has been selected for a $25,000 grant through the New Jersey Statewide Systemic Initiative program administered by Rutgers University. This program is designed to reform mathematics, science, and technology education throughout the state and will result in 20 science teachers receiving 30 hours   of education each at Sterling Hill.

At the Rock Discovery Center, students observe economically important rock and mineral samples as instructor Bob Hauck describes the characteristics of each. Then students search throughout the rock piles to find their own samples of basalt, coal,  garnet, marble, sandstone, and slate—all from quarries within 100 miles of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum.
