The Sterling
Hill Mining Museum proudly announces another facet in its science
education program:
THE STERLING HILL ASTRONOMY
GROUP
At the Ellis Observatory

Regular membership entitles you and your family to two weekend nights of
observing every month at the observatory. If a special event occurs,
additional viewing will be available. Use the massive 20-inch and
12.5-inch reflector telescopes to see:
|
 |
All of the planets- see the phases of Venus, polar ice caps on
Mars, colored cloud bands and moons of Jupiter, incredibly
detailed rings of Saturn and its moons, the icy blue world of
Uranus, and green-tinted distant Neptune. |
|
 |
“Deep Sky” objects- distant galaxies (each containing literally
billions of stars), nebulae (gas clouds within our Milky Way
Galaxy that are the birthplace of new stars), and planetary
nebulae (remnant shells of gas resulting from supernova
explosions). |
|
 |
Star clusters- tight groupings of stars that are positioned
thousands of times closer than those of our own stellar
neighborhood. |
|
 |
Our moon- incredibly detailed craters and mountains. Will be
viewed under special filters to reduce the brightness. Get the
feeling that you are in orbit floating above the surface! |
|
 |
The sun- safely view the sun with our special Hydrogen-Alpha
telescope. See amazing solar flares and prominences (in red
hydrogen alpha light) loop and burst above the sun’s surface.
|
|
 |
Constellations- our instructors will make you an expert in
learning the constellations and all of the brighter stars using
special green pointing lasers. |
|
Regular monthly
viewing: $25 per person per
year/ $35 per family per year.
Scout groups
and school classes- may be
combined with an afternoon underground mine tour and an on-site barbeque
or a separate observing session. Call or e-mail for details and pricing.
Science/
Astronomy “Parties”- for
special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries- get several hours
of personalized viewing and instruction for your private group. Call or
e-mail for details and pricing.
Events will be
announced at our new website and e-mailed to our members.
