Group Tours

Sterling Hill Mining Museum is located in beautiful Sussex County, in the northwestern part of New Jersey. We have been conducting tours in large groups for 15 years. Our specialty is conducting school and scout group tours. Below are basic facts of what our group tours are all about.

Upon arrival at the museum, tours are assembled as a whole group and brought into the museum and given a 30 minute introduction in the exhibit hall. After that, the large group is divided into classes with their respective teacher, chaperones and tour guide. The tour guide then  leads each group from the exhibit hall to the outside exhibits and then  into our most unique feature....the underground mine! Tour length is 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Group size limits: minimum of 10, maximum of 175 for one day.

Please allow at least two and a half hours, minimum visitation time at the Museum, preferably three hours. This includes lunch, gift shop browsing and the Rock Discovery Center option where each student builds their own rock collection after receiving a brief lecture on the various rock types!

Minimum time for reservations is one week prior to anticipated tour date. For large groups, call as soon as possible for scheduling. Morning tours fill first and quickly, afternoon tours are more available. All reservations are subject to availability.

Once a tour is booked, a confirmation will be sent to you.  If you decide not to come and wish to cancel, a minimum of 3 weeks notice is required or the group may incur some expenses if we are unable to rebook the date to another group.

Sorry...No rain dates allowed.

Costs: If the attending school's policy allows gift-shopping, the below pricing applies. If the attending school's policy DOES NOT allow gift-shopping, ADD $1.00 per person to prices below.

$9.00 for adults

$6.50 for children under 12. The Rock Discovery Center is an add-on option and is an additional $3.50. One teacher per class is free. Class size is 20-25 students. (Other adults are paying chaperones.)

Payment: Cash or check payable on arrival at the museum. Purchase orders are accepted. (If paying in cash, please have all cash collected prior to arrival.  )

Regardless of the weather or time of season, please make sure that the students bring light jackets or sweaters. It is a cool 56º year round in the mine.

We have indoor as well as outdoor sheltered picnic tables if you desire to have lunch on our property.

Modern and clean restroom facilities are available.

We have a concession stand and a fully stocked gift shop.
